Full Description

A sword fragment was recovered from waterlogged peat close to the river Witham and consists of the complete hilt and upper blade of a copper alloy sword. The sword belongs within the main span of the British Ewart Park tradition dating to the late Bronze Age. Its condition is near perfect and it is significant that its blade has unambiguous evidence for deliberate damage. It is also possible that the break across the blade might have happened at a casting-flaw. {1} The object was found during metal detection of the spoil heaps from the trench nearest the river Witham. {2}
