Full Description

The extant remains of Boston's Dominican friary, in Spain Lane, known as the Blackfriars building, has been interpreted as the refectory of the friary or (more likely) as the southern range of the cloister garth (see PRN10031). It is now being restored (2000). It is a long, two-storeyed stone building. The north face, in Spain Lane, shows two pointed doorways at the east end on the ground floor and four windows on the upper floor, each having two pointed lights cut out of one lintel stone, besides numerous modern openings. A stone grooved corbel below string-course level probably supported the wooden cloister roof. The south face is apparently blank and probably of 13th century date. In the 1950s the condition of the building was described as mutilated, the eastern end was tile-less and it was used as a rough storehouse. At sometime it was called the 'Priory'. It has now been restored and is used as a theatre and arts centre (2000). It was scheduled in the 1950s but was de-scheduled on 4 April 1990, although it remains a listed building. {1}{2} Known as Blackfriars, this is a two-storey limestone building with ashlar dressings and an irregular seven-bay front on the south side of Spain Lane. It has a twentieth century plain tiled roof and a modern brick gable end to the east. This was originally the refectory range of Boston’s Dominican friary (PRN10031) and is now an arts centre (2011). The building has been heavily restored and was altered in 1963. Inside there is a seventeenth century staircase which has been repositioned.
