Full Description
A meeting house and burial ground of the Society of Friends at Waddington. In 1680, Richard Stanley of Waddington declared his intention of bequeathing his house to the Society of Friends, and also gave land to be used as a burial ground. His house was called Orby Hall, and was located towards the southern end of the High Street. It was used for meetings following the death of Stanley in 1681, until 1695, by which time the Friends had built a meeting house on the donated land. This meeting house was registered in 1706, and was described as having ten sittings 'little elevated'. It was used as the meeting house for the Lincoln Friends from 1775 until 1826, when the meeting was discontinued following the death of the last local member, Joseph Chantry. The building is recorded as being used by Wesleyan Reformers in 1856, until the construction of their own chapel at Bar Lane in 1861 (see MLI80880). The site of the burial ground is depicted on the 1st edition 6" Ordnance Survey County Series map. The meeting house is described as being adjacent to the burial ground, although its exact location is not known, and it is not thought to still be extant. {1}{2}{3}{4}{5}
