A site visit was undertaken alongside archival and desk based research were undertaken as part of a historic building assessment in February 2020. Moortown House is believed to have been built in the first decade of the 19th century, at least by 1815. A detached date stone from an unknown location was found within the garden, inscribed ‘1816’. The house underwent considerable alteration in circa 1938 with the demolition of the large north-west wing and alteration of the north elevation. It was built by the Skipworth family who occupied the house and estate until the early 20th century. The south elevation currently comprises a two-storey, five-bay symmetrical elevation with hipped roof, rendered wall face, columned porch over the front door, and five sash windows. The east elevation comprises two curved two-storey bays with scored render to imitate ashlar stonework. This section is symmetrical with two sash windows at first floor and two further windows at ground floor level. The north elevation is the most altered. At its north-west corner, the former wing was removed and a two-storey painted brick structure has been built. There is a slate-roofed mono-pitch section across the centre of the elevation that steps up to meet the north pitch of the main body of the house. A single-storey, modern glazed porch forms a back entrance into the east side of the ground floor. The west elevation comprises a wide curved bay at ground floor level with a single sash window, and a further sash window at first floor level and another to the north over a doorway. There is a remnant part of the original building located to the north of the house today that is now a detached building. It may have once been either a back kitchen or wash house. This is a single-storey brick structure with a clay tiled roof, which has since been converted into a garage or store. A photographic record of the exterior of the building was also made during this assessment. {3}
