Full Description
A mid 18th century farmhouse which has undergone early 19th and mid 19th century alterations and additions. It was constructed of red brick in English garden wall bond, stucco and ashlar dressings and has a pantile roof with brick coped gables and kneelers and two end and one ridge stack. The farmhouse consists of three ranges. The southern, front range is the earliest and dates to the mid 18th century and contains the main reception rooms and bedrooms for the farmer and their family. To the north is a two storey service range, possibly dating to the early 19th century, although it may have replaced an earlier range on the same footprint. It includes storage rooms, a servants' stair, and a kitchen and dairy/larder, as well as access stairs for the cellars. The northwest corner range appears to have been built last, and includes a farm office for use by the farmer or his farm manager and a study, as well as two more bedrooms above. Historic mapping suggests that an enclosed yard once existed to the rear of the house, with a single outbuilding at its northwest corner (suggested to be a laundry and bakehouse). An external door from the farm office would have allowed the farmer access to the domestic stables. As of 2020, many of the farmhouse's internal fixtures and fittings dating from the 18th and 19th centuries were still extant and in reasonable condition. {2}
