Full Description

PRN 37664 [Note - this house is listed as no. 11 St Mary's Hill, however it is labelled as no. 10 in other sources] This house has a 19th century 'Black and White' 19th century front with a bowed early 19th century shop front. A passage at the south end of the building includes a mid 12th century archway [which is Scheduled - see PRN 30674] which was probably a side entrance to an early house. For the full description and the legal address of this listed building please refer to the appropriate List of Buildings of Special Architectural or Historic Interest. {1} This stone and timber framed house comprises the north half of a 12th century stone house which was partially rebuilt in the later middle ages and again in the 19th century. It incorporates pieces of 12th century stonework including an in situ 12th century doorway (PRN 30674) and also a blocked archway and remains of at least one more arch, seen during the rebuilding of no. 9A in 1885. The surviving late medieval timber framed structure was drawn in 1829, prior to the alteration of the front to its present appearance in 1881. The first floor was originally open to the roof and has some early roof beams. At the west end of the house the late 19th century alterations have removed most early features. The original medieval house would have been at least 36 feet from front to rear and around 40 feet along the front (the combined width of no. 9A and no. 10) and had an unvaulted undercroft as the ground floor with domestic accommodation on the upper floor. {2} The original medieval house may have been similar to Jews Court in Lincoln. {4}
