Full Description

PRN 30674 [Note - although the Scheduling document refers to no. 11, some Ordnance Survey mapping and other sources label the house as no. 10.] 12th century arch with chevron moulding, somewhat distorted, probably reset. A plaque states 'is Believed to be a postern of the city wall'. It supports south end of no 11 (a timber framed house, mostly faked, but perhaps in origin genuine 16th century date). The arch leads to a narrow entry the south side of which (running west from the arch) is an old wall containing half a large semicircular arch, blocked. {3} This arch (which is also known as the Pack-horse or Packhouse Arch) is in situ and was originally part of a 12th century stone house (not part of the town walls as stated on the plaque - the town walls never ran up this street). {4} The 12th century house was partially rebuilt with timber framing in the late medieval period, and again in the 19th century (see PRN 37664). The arch is in its original position and there are further traces of early stonework including a blocked arch in the passageway to the rear. The original house measured at least 36 feet from front to rear, based on the location of the other stonework, and was around 40 feet long (the combined width of nos 9A and 10). It had a ground floor unvaulted undercroft and living accommodation on the first floor. {5} For the full description and the legal address of this listed building please refer to the appropriate List of Buildings of Special Architectural or Historic Interest. {6}
