Full Description
A house and shop which was originally built in the 18th century and then rebuilt and refronted in the 19th century. It has coursed limestone rubble to the rear and is fronted with red brick. It has a pantiled roof and two gable stacks. 46-46A High Street formed a row of four dwellings in the 19th century (or possibly dwellings and agricultural buildings). They show several phases of construction from at least the 18th and throughout the 18th, 19th and 20th centuries. The east, street-side section was rebuilt in 1860 and at some time in the 20th century the row passed into single occupancy. In 1989 it was converted into two dwellings, with the east 19th century section in use as an antique shop. Ordnance Survey maps of 1888, 1904 and 1930 show that the original east dwelling was a little larger than it is now (as 46A), extending slightly further west. The buildings are constructed of stone and brick, with some timber framing to internal walls, and with tiled roofs. The south elevation and rooflines are irregular. Inside the kitchen of 46A and to the north of the door is a recess over which is a wide chamfered bressumer. The room also contains a chamfered transverse beam with run-out stops. The first floor retains at least one internal wall with timber framing of slight studwork. Inside 46 there is a large living room with several transverse chamfered beams without stops. There are some original timbers in the roof spaces and a timber framed reed partition.
46-46A High Street was visited by English Heritage in September 2010, to assess the building for de-listing. It was felt that the building had been too much altered and had lost a significant proportion of its original fabric. The building was subsequently de-listed in October 2015. {2}{3}
