Full Description

A house dating from the late 18th century which underwent alterations in the 19th century. It was constructed of white painted brick with a stone coped tumbled gable and has a pantile roof with brick gable stacks. For the full description and the legal address of this listed building please refer to the appropriate List of Buildings of Special Architectural or Historic Interest. {1} Features relating to the construction and occupation of the house were recorded in June 2016, during the archaeological monitoring of groundworks for new drainage. The monitoring revealed that the building sat upon a sequence of relict ploughsoil deposits, suggesting this area was in agricultural use prior to the house's construction. Brick foundation courses of the building and its attached boiler room were exposed in several places along the excavated drainage trenches, as were the remains of a small flight of brick steps that would have provided access to a now blocked doorway in the north wall of the boiler room. A line of handmade bricks, set on end and likely forming the edging to a former path or flowerbed, were also exposed to the immediate west of the house. The monitoring also recorded the remains of a former rubbish pit a short distance to the west of the building, from which a small collection of late 19th century pottery, glass and shell was recovered. {2}{3}
