Full Description
A stable block dating from 1777 and probably built by William Legg, which underwent alterations in the 20th century. It was constructed of red brick with ashlar dressings and has slate roofs with hipped end bays on the west front and two hip stacks. The building was the subject of a programme of historic building recording, undertaken in February 2013, to inform a management plan for the building's repair and restoration. The building was constructed by the Turnor family, the owners of the Panton Hall Estate in the late 18th century, and were designed to accommodate 60 horses and a pack of harriers. The building was designed to make a statement of grandeur to visitors to the estate, with an elaborate archway on the north elevation serving as the main entrance for carriages as well as horses. The building originally formed and enclosed courtyard, though was opened relatively early in the building's life with the removal of the south elevation. The Panton Hall Estate was sold in 1917, and the hall and stables were then occupied by the Franciscan Order, who converted the buildings into a school, adding a chapel, dormitories and refectory to the first floor of the stables building. The building has more recently been used for chicken farming and as general purpose agricultural stores. {2}{3}
In May 1935 Panton Hall was bought by Sir John Denton Marsden who lived in part of the stables until his death in 1944. For information on the historic owners of the Panton Hall estate, including the stables, see PRN 49390. {4}
