Description
PANTON PANTON HALL LANE (east side) Stable block at site of Panton Hall TF 18 SE 2/34 II Stable block. 1777, C20. Probably by William Legg. Red brick with ashlar dressings. Slate roofs with hipped end bays on west front and 2 hip stacks. 3 sides of courtyard with smaller inner projections to east and west. 2 storey, 13 bay north front with central 3 bays and end bays projecting slightly. Central doorway with flanking brick pilasters, large fanlight with spokes, band of dentillations and balustrade above and double plank doors. Doorway flanked by single round headed niches. 5 round headed glazing bar sashes in various stages of disrepair and blocking, on each side. Ashlar first floor band runs at shoulder level of ground floor windows, rising to segmental pediment with raised keystone above doorway. Statue above keystone with ashlar plaque with guttae above. Ashlar dressed pediment above, with cartouche. Statue flanked by 6 small glazing bar sashes with wedge lintels, on each side. West front of 2 storeys and 11 bays, the 3 central bays and single outer bays projecting slightly, the former crowned by ashlar dressed pediment with ashlar dressed oculus. Ashlar band at shoulder level of ground floor windows. Central blind round headed opening, flanked by single round headed glazing bar sashes, all with outer brick moulded surrounds. Large ashlar dressed archway with raised keystone to left, flanked by single round headed glazing bar sashes. Round headed glazing bar sash to left with outer brick moulded surround. Large blocked ashlar dressed archway to right of central bays, with raised keystone, blocked by C20 brick with upper fixed casements. Archway flanked by single round headed glazing bar sashes with single round headed glazing bar sash to right with outer brick moulded surround. Central blind panel above flanked by single windows, that to left without frame, glazing bar sash to right, 3 glazing bar sashes to left, 3 glazing bar sashes to right. Single round headed glazing bar sashes in end bays to left and right. South end of west block with blind round headed opening with moulded brick surround and ashlar string course. Single glazing bar sash above flanked by single blind panels. Interior courtyard with ashlar string course running round at shoulder level of ground floor openings. C20 open lean-to supported on brick piers covers ground floor on east and south sides but removed from west side. East side of 2 storeys, 10 bays plus projecting bay to left. Doorway to left with segmental head, 4 glazing bar sashes with round heads to right. 4 glazing bar sashes above flanked by single Diocletian windows with glazing bars, each with narrow glazing bar sash beyond. 2 storey, 9 bay south side with central bay projecting with ashlar dressed pediment and ashlar dressed oculus, round headed archway with damaged head and parapet above with small rectangular openings. 4 round headed glazing bar sashes to right, blocked round headed doorway to left, flanked by single round headed glazing bar sashes. C20 lean-to without roof in north-east corner. West front of inner courtyard of 2 storeys and 7 bays with 8th bay projecting to right. Central round headed blind opening flanked by 2 round headed glazing bar sashes on each side. Projecting bay to left with large rectangular opening with wooden lintel. Return walls of projection with single blind round headed opening to south and blocked round headed glazing bar sash to left. Central blind Diocletian panel above flanked by 3 glazing bar sashes on each side. Listing NGR: TF1815980481
