Full Description
A receiver block for the Chain Home radar station of RAF Stenigot (see MLI43220). Construction began in 1938, with the block being built of brick with a flat reinforced concrete roof. Stenigot was one of twenty sites along the east coast of Britain which had been chosen as 'Advanced' stations by September 1937. The transmitter (see MLI93441) and receiver blocks and towers (see MLI93443) - of which the surviving example is the most complete to have survived on any of the Chain Home stations - had been completed by 1939. The transmission and receiving of radio waves were essential functions of radio direction finding equipment (radar), and the operation of both were based in buildings surrounded by blast walls for defence against air attack. This station was a 'Type A' site, and was modelled on the standard layout established at Bawdsey Experimental Station. For the full description and the legal address of this listed building please refer to the appropriate List of Buildings of Special Architectural or Historic Interest. {1}{2}
Despite being listed, the receiver block building has been demolished. It is thought that the structure survived the main demolition activites conducted at the former station in 1996, but was demolished at some time in 1999. No trace of the former structure can now (2018) be discerned on the Google Maps aerial photographic layer. The building was subsequently de-listed. {3}{4}{5}
