Full Description

A house, now shop, dating from the 15th century which underwent alterations in the early 18th and 20th centuries. It was constructed of painted brick and has a plain tiled roof with a single gable stack and coped gables. For the former listing description and legal address of this listed building please refer to the appropriate List of Buildings of Special Architectural or Historic Interest. {1} A shop with accommodation above, it is built of red brick with tiled roofs. The building has a three-storey front range orientated north to south, with a two-storey back wing, the same width as the front but with its roof orientated west to east. It has at least three phases of construction, the earliest phase being the back wing, which may date to the 15th or 16th century, and is a rectangular building with a gable end facing the market place. A third storey was added to the west end, creating a more fashionable double-fronted building, probably in the late 17th or 18th century. There was a late 18th or early 19th century refronting and at about the same time the back wing was modified with the addition of sash windows. The interior has been largely modernised. There is, however, an early to mid 18th century dogleg stair from the second to the third floor. The back wing has a collar rafter roof. For the full description of this listed building please refer to the National Heritage List for England. {2}{3}
