Full Description
Site of a former meeting house of the Society of Friends, at Lincoln Lane. The meeting house is marked on maps dating to 1741 and 1779, and is also discussed by Thompson, who related that it had been converted to two tenements by 1856. A footnote in Thompson's volume states that the Society of Friends had an associated burial ground, situated 'about half a mile north of the Grand Sluice, and near the 'hop-house' on the west side of the river'. The parish registers contained records of many burials there, between 1703 and 1780. {1}{2}{3}{4}{5}
Documentary sources record that the meeting house was conveyed to trustees in 1730, although it may possibly have been built much earlier. It was sold in 1809, and was converted to two dwellings. The associated burial ground was located somewhere in the Fenside area of Boston, and was bequethed by John Chantry in 1716. It was also sold in 1809, with the profits from both sales going towards the cost of rebuilding the Spalding meeting house. The meeting in Boston subsequently moved to Chapel Row, when the former Unitarian chapel was bought in 1812 (see MLI92050). {6}
