Full Description

Red brick and half-timbered hotel, built 1905 and extended 1910, owned by the Maple family. It was used as the Officers Mess of 617 Squadron during the Second World War. For the full description and the legal address of this listed building please refer to the appropriate List of Buildings of Special Architectural or Historic Interest. {1} The hotel was formerly a house. It was extended several times during the early 20th century. {2} The Petwood Hotel was built in the Arts and Crafts style to match the predominant form of the village, though has much greater use of Tudor style half timbering. The surrounding gardens were designed and laid out by Harold Peto in 1912 (see PRN 49195). The building was converted from a private house to a hotel in 1933, though suffered damage in 1934, when the north wing was gutted by fire. The building has been altered and extended many times throughout its history of use as a hotel. {3}{4} Like many large houses, Petwood became a military convalescence hospital during the First World War, but returned to being a private home shortly after. High taxes and running costs forced the owners to sell the freehold in the early 1930s, and the house was run as a hotel until 1940. It was then requisitioned by the RAF, becoming the Officers’ Mess for three squadrons, including 617 Squadron, the ‘Dam Busters’. After the war, Petwood reverted to being a hotel which it has remained. The surrounding gardens at the Petwood Hotel have been designated as a Registered Park (see PRN 49195). {5}
