Full Description

Church hall which, together with the church (PRN 45535), is a prominent feature of the streetscape. This building is identified as of being of townscape interest by the Louth Conservation Area Appraisal. {1} The Eastgate Union Church and adjoining Church Hall were assessed by English Heritage in May 2013, as part of the Louth Defined Area Survey. It was decided that the criteria for listing was not met in this instance, as their construction and treatment are typical of their period, and are not deemed to be of sufficient architectural interest to be warrant designation. A considerable portion of the original internal fixtures and fittings have also been removed. Although Pevsner states that the Eastgate Union Church was constructed in 1854, an inscription within the church, and other historic documentation, states that it was built as a General Baptist Church in 1863, and it is likely that the church hall was constructed at the same time. The single-storey hall is attached to the rear of the church, facing Ramsgate, also in a classical style and with the same construction and treatment as the church. The main entrance is approached by steps from Ramsgate and has a two-leaf timber door with a semi-circular fanlight and stone and brick detailing. The hall interior has exposed timber roof trusses resting on moulded stone corbels and wall panelling to dado height. {2}{3}
