Undated features at Castle Quarry, Ancaster

Type and Period (3)

Protected Status/Designation

  • None recorded

Full Description

PRN 37103 A number of undated features including ditches, pits and a post hole were found during trial trenching. It is thought that these features are more likely to be Iron Age or Roman that later, as there appears to be more intensive settlement in the area during these periods, however no dating evidence was recovered and they remain undated. {1}{2} An archaeological strip, map and record was undertaken by Pre-Construct Archaeological Services in 2009 during the ongoing management plan for the extensions of Castle Quarry. A post hole and a pit which contained burnt stone fragments and burnt animal bone was found. These may be associated with the Iron Age settlement [PRN 30340] or Roman military camp [PRN 37102]. {3}{4}
