Full Description

PRN 37102 A section of distinctive v-shaped ditch with a single rounded corner was seen during trial trenching. This feature remains undated however it is suggested that it represents the ditch of a Roman marching camp although is currently a speculative interpretation. A single large pit or ditch also produced 4 sherds of Roman pottery. {1}{2} An archaeological strip, map and record was undertaken by Pre-Construct Archaeological Services in 2009 during an ongonig management plan for the extensions of Castle Quarry. A defensive ditch and defended titulum-style entrance from a Roman military camp was found. Articulated human remains were found in the north-east terminus of one of the ditches. There was also a pit which may have been a lilia-type concealed pit. {3}{4}
