Full Description
War memorial gateway. c.1918. Limestone ashlar. Rectangular gateway with moulded semi-circular headed archway with scrolled keystone and moulded imposts. Archway flanked by pairs of columns at each side with foliate capitals, high plinths below and plaques inscribed with the names of the fallen in between. Dates 1914 and 1918 in the spandrels. Entablature surmounted by large inscription block inscribed: "Erected in memory of the men of Wainfleet All Saints who fell in the Great War". Moulded cornice above. The cemetery covers much of the eastern side of Spilsby Road. This defined by a hedge along the road with a minature 'triumphal arch' at the entrance which was built as a memorial to the men of the town lost in the Great War. It is of limestone and has pairs of columns flanking the arched gateway.{2}
Wainfleet All Saints war memorial is the western archway entrance to the Spilsby Road cemetery. Unveiled in 1920, the archway is an impressive 14ft (4ms) high semi-circular triumphal arch made out of Monks Park limestone from Wiltshire. Wrought iron gates were placed across the entrance, and names of the fallen from the First World War and the Second World War are listed on stone tablets. {3}
