Full Description

PRN 70594 Evidence for undated quarrying activity was seen during a watching brief. Quarry pits probably used for limestone extraction were seen but were unable to be dated. {1}{2} An archaeological evaluation was undertaken in June 2008 which revealed a sequence of dumped deposits relating to the backfilling of a medieval quarry pit. The deposits included 12th to 15th century floor tile and 12th to 13th century pottery. {3}{4} A watching brief in September to December 2008 revealed further evidence of medieval quarrying, including the south-eastern face of the quarry (shown to be approximately 5m deep) identified by the June 2008 evaluation. Small assemblages of roof tile dated 12th to 15th and 13th to 14th century, together with a fragment of a Lincoln Glazed Ware jug were retrieved from deposits backfilled into the quarry. Two more quarries were found in the southern part of the site. The westernmost of the two was at least 4.3m deep, with a steep northern face, which extended east to west across the site. The only finds from the feature were two architectural fragments including a rare volute capital (one of 40 known in the county), which, it was speculated, might have been destined for the cathedral, but was rejected for uncertain reasons. The third quarry, at around 5m deep, lay at the south-eastern corner of the site and produced two fragments of 12th to 14th century roof tile. {5}{6}
