Full Description

PRN 34579 [This record contains information from PRN 34578, which has now been amalgamated with this record and deleted.] An abundant surface scatter of briquetage, indicative of the presence of an Iron Age and/or Roman salt working site, was observed during fieldwalking at TF 1491 3278. An unidentified and undated soilmark was also seen, and a fragment of bone and a single unidentified sherd were also found. Another abundant surface scatter of briquetage was seen at TF 1467 3278. An unidentified and undated soilmark was also seen. {1} During an archaeological evaluation, further evidence of late Iron Age - Roman saltmaking activity was discovered. Geophysical survey revealed a ditch and several anomalies indicating the presence of fired material. These were investigated by trial excavation, which also revealed further gullies. A large quantity of briquetage of late Iron Age - Roman type including large pieces of salt pans and possible pedestals was recovered. The ditch and gullies may have been used as feeder ditches or sea water capture areas to supply salt water to the salt processing area that produced the waste briquetage. A single sherd of Roman greyware was also recovered. {2}{3}
