Full Description

PRN 70547 St Clement's is the least known of the Bail churches. Its foundation date is uncertain although it has been suggested, based on its dedication, that it may have been founded in the early 11th century. It is not mentioned directly in the documentary record until 1302 although references to the parish appear in the 12th century. It is situated in a peripheral location and the parish was never well populated. It may have ceased to function by the end of the 14th century although this is not certain and the churchyard certainly remained defined until at least 1457. The location of the church and churchyard is unclear and it was previously believed to lie in the vicinity of the graveyard of St Mary Magdalene on the east side of West Bight although it is now believed to lie further to the west, in the area of the water tower. {1}{2}{3}{4} Trial trenching in August 2008 revealed robbed walls of a building which were possibly part of the north transept and nave of St Clement's Church. {7}{8}
