Full Description
Two large ditches and several pits were recorded in February 2005, during trial trenching on land behind the Council Houses, Greatford. One of the pits contained sherds of probable 5th to 6th century Saxon pottery and fragments of animal bone. The fills of all the features were very similar, suggesting they shared a contemporary date. It was thought that the ditches may form part of an enclosure or field system, possibly relating to the numerous cropmarks in the area, although these are usually considered to be Iron Age and/or Roman in date. {1}{2}
A subsequent archaeological watching brief was conducted in September 2006, during the groundworks associated with the digging of a pond, and monitored the area where the ditches were found. The work allowed a clearer understanding to be made of the relationship between the ditch features. No dateable material was recovered from either ditch, and whilst they were thought to be contemporary with the Saxon activity previously identified in this area, one of the ditches had a sharp right-angled bend, which may suggest an earlier Roman date. {3}{4}
