Full Description
PRN 55375
Romano-British pottery and ceramic building material have been reported from this site since the 1960s, and a length of squared masonry was seen in 1962. Features are also visible on aerial photographs. During 2001-2005, Wrawby Local History Group in conjunction with North Lincolnshire Museum and Scunthorpe Metal Detecting Society carried out a programme of investigations including fieldwalking, metal detecting and geophysical survey. A large quantity of Romano-British pottery and ceramic building material was found along with several Roman coins. This material is concentrated within the area of cropmarks although there is a light scatter beyond that area. The geophysical survey showed anomalies which may indicate the presence of walls and a possible structure. The building materials, which include hypocaust tile and large quantities of roof tile, also suggest the presence of a building on the site. The pottery is mostly greyware but also includes some samian and mortaria fragments. [For full details of this site, see the North Lincolnshire SMR records, copies of which are in the Bigby parish file.] {1}
During trial trenching on land at Highfield Lane, Wrawby and Bigby, in September 2007, Archaeological Project Services revealed evidence of Romano British settlement activity. A circular pit containing Romano British pottery and glass, a linear feature containing a sherd of pottery and a ditch containing animal remains and pottery were found in Trench One. In Trench Two postholes and ditches containing pottery were found. Trench Three revealed ditches containing pottery and animal remains and in Trench Four ditches containing pottery along with Iron Age pottery [see PRN 56336] was revealed. Trench Five contained a ditch with fired clay, four possible postholes and a pit containing more fired clay, possibly dating from the Romano British period was found. {2}{3}
