Full Description
Pevsner described Highfield House as being designed in a 'Gothic, towering and asymmetrical' style. It features a staircase hall lit by a glazed lantern in the middle of the house. A cantilevered stair with a fireplace across the corner was under the first landing. {1}
The building was designed by the Lincoln based architectural firm of Bellamy and Hardy. The architects placed a notice in the 13th of March 1863 edition of the Lincoln, Rutland and Stamford Mercury, stating that a tender from the Gainsborough builder Mr Jabez Taylor had been accepted to undertake the construction works. {2}
Highfield House survives as a good example of a mid 19th century Gothic revival suburban villa. It was built in 1863, to the designs of Bellamy and Hardy, who constructed the house for a Mr Burton. The building was listed as being occupied by Frank Merewether Burton FGS in 1896. The building is constructed of red brick laid in Flemish bond, with ashlar stone dressings, and features steeply pitched slate roofs with a glazed wooden lantern topped with an ornate iron weathervane. The house is square in plan, with an entrance corridor opening into a square central stairwell and hallway. Rooms are arranged to open off the central hall, with service rooms and a subsidiary staircase to the north side of the building. The first floor has a similar arrangement, with bedrooms opening off the central stairwell. The subsidiary staircase extends to a garret. The building appears to be little altered, aside from the addition of a conservatory, built onto the west side of the house in the 1960s. The building retains many original features including fireplaces and principal stair with decorative iron balustrade. For the full description and the legal address of this listed building please refer to the appropriate entry in the National Heritage List for England. {3}
Highfield House is depicted on the 1st edition 6" Ordnance Survey County Series map, with its surrounding parkland (see MLI126036). The map shows the house with its former entrance lodge (see MLI126407), and the former main entrance driveway to the south-west (unlike the present arrangement, where Highfield House is approached from the north-west). {4}
