Full Description
Earthwork remains of the medieval village of Bratoft, comprising enclosures, tofts and crofts, boundaries, buildings and mounds, identified on aerial photography by the National Mapping Programme. {1}
Traces of medieval ridge and furrow were noted in 1986, in the area around the remains of Bratoft Hall (PRN 40716). The ridge and furrow was identified as a series of roughly east to west aligned earthworks, each roughly 0.75-1m wide.
Traces of ridge and furrow were also observed in the field to the west of Ivy Cottage (PRN49185). The remains were again identified as a series of roughly east to west aligned earthworks. {2}
The earthworks around the remains of Bratoft Hall were surveyed in 2012, when it was argued that the features immediately around the moat represented the remains of an Elizabethan formal garden (see PRN 40716). Substantial earthworks to the south of the ponds were also recorded and possibly represent a later expansion of the formal gardens to the north (see PRN 40717). An area, further to the south-east of the remains of Bratoft Hall, was also surveyed in 2012. The earthworks here were considerably different in form from those immediately around the hall, and were thought to represent the remains of medieval settlement, including tofts and crofts. These earthworks are characterised by a series of banks and ditches, forming elongated, sub-rectangular enclosures. {3}
