Full Description

Two main areas of grass-covered earthworks survive in a field centred on TF 475 650. The remains 'are enigmatic, it is likely that these earthworks are of an industrial origin rather than domestic'. {1}{2}{3} Earthworks centred on TF 474 653 are old clay pits. Others are field strips and shrinkage. {4} Air photos suggest the village of Bratoft is now much reduced in size. {5} These substantial earthworks, to the south-east of the remains of Bratoft Hall, were surveyed in 2012. Rather than representing industrial activity, the earthworks were thought to represent a later expansion of possible Elizabethan formal gardens to the north. The earthworks comprise the remains of at least one but possibly three small, rectangular ponds, and a number of pronounced curvilinear earthworks, possibly representing raised walkways, water-filled canals and viewing mounds. {6}
