Site of the former medieval Church of St Clement. The church is thought to have been built c.1225, although its location away from the main medieval settlement area, and the form of its surrounding churchyard may indicate an earlier origin for the site. The church is known to have been a small stone building, with a tower containing 3 bells. It reportedly fell into disrepair in 1841 when the lead was removed from the roof. The church was restored in 1877, but was then demolished in 1885 and rebuilt approximately 300m to the north-west (see MLI41260). {1}{2}{3} The site of the former church and churchyard is visible on aerial photographs examined as part of the National Mapping Programme. Earthworks of a faint hollow way leading north-west from the northern edge of the churchyard towards Saltfleetby St Clement were also noted. {4} The former burial ground survives as an extant structure, clearly discernible (although now largely covered by trees) on the Google Maps aerial photographic layer. {5}
