Full Description

Former parish church, declared redundant in 1973. The original medieval Church of St Clement was located approximately 300m to the south-west (see MLI88197). That church was demolished in 1885, with some of the material being re-used in the construction of the current church. The architect for the 1885 church was William Mortimer of Lincoln. {1}{2} Parish church, built in 1885-6 by W. Mortimer, re-using early 13th and mid 14th century fragments from an earlier church. Built of limestone and greenstone rubble, with limestone ashlar dressings. Slate roofs with decorative red ridge tiles and cross finial. West tower, nave with north aisle and south porch, chancel with north vestry. West tower with plinth and 2 stage angle buttresses. For the full description and the legal address of this listed building please refer to the appropriate List of Buildings of Special Architectural or Historic Interest. {3} The church tower is known to have been used as an observation post during the Second World War, and would have helped co-ordinate nearby defences in the event of invasion. {4}{5} A photographic survey of the former church was conducted in December 2017, to inform the building's proposed conversion to residential use. After being declared redundant in 1973, the building was converted in 1977, intially to be used as a craft centre, before passing through a number of different functions. The building is largely constructed from Ancaster stone and red brick, with the bricks generally hidden in the foundations or covered with lime plaster. The roofs are largely of Welsh slate, although are not thought to be the original material, with the building likely having been re-slated at some point. {6}
