Full Description

PRN 36595 An archaeological watching brief and excavation along the route of the Silk Willoughby to Staythorpe Gas Pipeline identified four features date to the middle Iron Age. A gully, measuring 5m long, 0.50m wide and 0.22m deep produced pottery from three vessels together with fragments of daub which may indicate some activity in the area. A gully nearby contained burnt animal bone, ash and charcoal. A curvilinear ditch measuring 0.80m wide and 0.35m deep crossed the southern side of the site and produced twelve sherds of pottery of mid-Iron Age date. More burnt material, including animal bone and fire-cracked stones were recovered from its fill. Another north to south aligned ditch contained four sherds of Mid-Iron Age pottery.{1}{2}
