Full Description

Cropmarks of former salterns were identified on aerial photographs by the National Mapping Programme. {1} Weak magentic anomalies, interpreted as former palaeochannels, were recorded during a magnetometry survey conducted in 2011, on land at Newton Marsh. The former channels appeared to correlate well with previously identified cropmarks of medieval salterns, and were probably utilised in the salt-making process. {2} Buried land surfaces, glacial till and former palaeochannels were revealed across this area in December 2012, during an auger survey and trial trenching on land at Bishopthorpe Farm, Bishopthorpe, Tetney. Although no specific archaeological activity was revealed by the trenches in this area, the ready access to saltwater and firm ground in this location would indicate an area that was very conducive to saltmaking activities. {3}{4}
