Full Description

PRN 45942 Grammar school built in 1881 from Farlesthorpe brick with red polychromatic bands and ashlar dressings. It has a decorative tiled roof and a wooden shingled bellcote. For the full description and the legal address of this listed building please refer to the appropriate List of Buildings of Special Architectural or Historic Interest. {1}{2} Originally founded in the mid 16th century, the school moved to the current site in 1881. By 1884 the school had 65 pupils. {3} White's 1856 Trade Directory states that the grammar school was founded by Francis Spanning in 1565. At the time the schoolmaster had a 'good house, with a large garden', and two school rooms for teaching. {4}
