Full Description
PRN 55219
153 trial trenches were excavated on the proposed route of the Lincoln Eastern Bypass. Ditches, gullies and pits were uncovered. They were dated to the Late Iron Age by the pottery that they contained. One ditch also contained limestone blocks in a line which may have been part of a wall. In one ditch, interpreted as a boundary ditch, there was a collection of 4 complete squashed Iron Age pots, which may have been ritually deposited into the ditch. There was evidence of hammerscale and iron slag in the ditch fills which suggests that iron working was going on in the area. Also in the ditches was evidence of charred grains, fired clay and large amounts of animal bone suggesting a occupation site. {1} {2}
