Full Description

Short row of terrace houses, thought to date from the 18th century. Of two storeys and built of painted brick. For the full description and the legal address of this listed building please refer to the appropriate entry in the National Heritage List for England. {1}{2} The building was assessed in June 2007, during the Louth Conservation Area Appraisal. {3} Nos. 70-74 Upgate are believed to have been built in the late 18th or early 19th century. They were listed in 1974 and subsequently modernised, with new door and window joinery replacing the earlier sash windows and panelled doors. Internally, fireplaces and stair cases were removed, kitchens were remodelled and bathrooms were created at first-floor level. These houses are built of painted red brick with 20th century clay pantile roof. There is a tumbled gable to no. 70. There are brick, ridge and gable chimneys. The individual dwellings appear originally to have had single, front and rear rooms with a straight flight of stairs against the gable or partition wall within the front room. The front elevation has three windows to each of the two storeys, with a blocked opening alongside each of the upper floor windows. The buildings have all been significantly altered both internally and externally, and were thought to no longer merit designation. They were consequently delisted in 2019 and the terrace remains in residential use. {4}{5}
