Full Description

Eighteenth century brick house. For the full description and the legal address of this listed building please refer to the appropriate List of Buildings of Special Architectural or Historic Interest. {1}{2} The remains of a red tiled floor was recorded within the basement of 8 Upgate in July 2008, during archaeological monitoring of groundworks for internal alterations. Removal of the basement staircase exposed a short low wall, resting upon the tiled floor. It was unclear, however, whether the floor was contemporary with the staircase, or if the floor had formed part of an earlier set of stairs. Natural deposits were also exposed by the groundworks to replace a nearby doorway, and it appears that the construction of the basement removed traces of any earlier archaeological features in this area. {3}{4}
