Full Description
Two shallow linear depresssions which may represent ditches were identified in May 2001, during a site visit, conducted to assess the impact of the proposed extension to Highfield Quarry, Welton le Marsh. {1}{2}
Several linear and curvilinear magnetic anomalies were identified in this area during a fluxgate gradiometer survey, conducted in September 2001 to assess the proposed extension to Highfield Quarry, Welton Le Marsh. The anomalies were interpreted as number of possible enclosures, boundary ditches and pits, of unknown date. {3}{4}
Further geophysical survey, conducted in August 2004, identified traces of significant archaeological potential, including two clearly defined enclosures with associated boundary systems. The enclosure systems were thought to date to the prehistoric and/or Roman periods, given their morphology, and appeared to have associated internal features, including pits and possible circular structures. A number of other potential ditches were also recorded in the southern part of the site. {5}
The probable enclosure systems identified by the previous geophysical surveys were subsequently investigated and confirmed by a programme of trial trenching, conducted between September 2006 and January 2007. The trenches revealed a large number of ditch and pit features, many of which contained fragments of late Iron Age pottery, suggesting a pre-Roman date for the enclosure systems. The features were generally rather poorly preserved, however, and many appeared to have been truncated by ploughing. The ditch-like features previously recorded in the southern part of the site were revealed to be of natural origin. {6}{7}
