Full Description

An earthwork bank and flanking ditch was recorded in this location in the winter of 1990-1. The feature was noted during a programme of archaeological field walking, conducted to inform the proposed dualling of the A46 road between Newark and Lincoln. The bank lies within a narrow belt of woodland on the north-western side of the Fosse Way, and runs for a distance of about 380m before continuing in a north-westerly direction. The earthwork follows the former Thorpe on the Hill and Haddington parish boundary, and likely acted as a boundary marker. It was suggested that the bank and ditch may be pre-Roman, and that the road, and the later parish boundary were laid out along this already existing landscape feature. This theory remains speculative, however, and the exact origins of the feature remains unknown. {1}
