Full Description
Lych gate at the Church of St Mary. Erected from 1918 as a war memorial to the fallen of the First World War. It is constructed of timber and ashlar with a plain gabled roof. It comprises a pair of wooden gates, between ashlar chamfered walls topped with braced wooden structure bearing the inscription 'To the Glory of God' and a commemorative brass plate. The roof has ornate carved barge boarding and is surmounted by a cross finial. The lych gate to the Church of St Mary serves as Carlton le Moorland's war memorial. Unveiled in 1920, the gate is situated at the north-western corner of the churchyard on Church Street. The memorial honours the fallen of the First World War and the Second World War with brass shields fixed to the gables. The lych gate itself is constructed of English oak and has chamfered ashlar flank walls, a plain tile roof and an ornate barge-boarding surmounted with a simple cross. {2}
