Full Description

A church and a priest were mentioned in the Domesday Book as being part of a manor at Carlton le Moorland. {1} The church has medieval features and an Anglo-Saxon tower. The church was extensively remodelled in the 16th century, and then restored in 1890-91. It is constructed of coursed limestone rubble, and features plain tile and lead roofs. For the full description and the legal address of this listed building please refer to the appropriate List of Buildings of Special Architectural or Historic Interest. {2}{3}{4}{5} A stone decorated with a cross-pattee design dating to the 12th or 13th century has been recorded at the Church of St Mary. It is thought that the stone may have originally been used as a possible grave cover. The current location of the stone is no longer known. {6} Repair works to the church are mentioned as taking place 'a few years ago' (presumably the early 19th century), at the same time that a schoolroom was built nearby (see PRN 63003). {7}
