Full Description
An archaeological evaluation was undertaken on land at Manor Farm, Sudbrook (Ancaster Parish), in advance of residential development. The evaluation identified a curvilinear ditch 0.68m wide and 0.15m deep, with irregular sloping sides and a rounded base and terminating at the southwest end. The ditch was filled with a dark brown silty sand from which Romano-British pottery sherds, dating to the 2nd to 3rd century were recovered. The ditch may be part of a ring ditch from a c.3.7m circular building. The presence of an undated (though possibly associated) post-hole (PRN 36494) could support this interpretation. The environmental evidence from the ditch indicated crop processing and possibly malting were the main activities in the area, which could suggest that the proposed structure could have been a granary or malting house. However, not enough of the structure was revealed to be certain. An alternative interpretation for the ditch is that it was part of an entrance to a ditched enclosure around an area of agricultural activity. In either case, it is a strong indicator of Romano-British occupation of the site, possibly a satellite farm associated with the nearby Roman town of Ancaster. {1}{2}
Further trial trenching in August 2006 revealed a north-south aligned ditch, believed to form part of a Romano-British boundary or field system. A number of undated features including ditches were also identified which may be related to the Romano-British site. {3}{4}
Romano-British pottery sherds were recovered during a watching brief at the site. This small pottery assemblage includes 2nd century Samian ware and greyware. {5}{6}
