Full Description

PRN 70348 An archaeological evaluation was undertaken on land to the rear of Wigford House, Brayford Wharf East, Lincoln. The evaluation was undertaken in advance of a scheme to convert Wigford House into residential apartments. The hand excavation of three trenches established that much of the area had been heavily disturbed by 19th century buildings up to a depth of c.0.80m. A substantial stepped brick building foundation found in Trench 2 probably relates to Seely's Mill, built in 1839 and demolished in 1970. Seely's Mill (later to be known as Holmes Grain Warehouse) was an imposing red brick building standing seven stories in height. A cobbled area noted in Trench 2 probably represents an exterior surface linked to either the warehouse itself or the railway to the south. {1}{2}
