PRN 23835
Archaeological evaluation (trial trenching) on land at Woolram Wygate, Spalding, found evidence for Romano-British settlement activity; in the form of ditches, pits and an occupation layer dating to between the 2nd and the 4th century. Although direct evidence for dwellings or structures were not found, the nature of the finds suggests that these features may occur in the near vicinity. The finds include unabraded pottery, animal bone and a rotary quernstone fragment. {1} {2}
A Fluxgate Gradiometer (Magnetometry) Survey was undertaken on land at Wygate Park, Spalding as part of a larger archaeological investigation of the proposed development site, in order to place the findings from earlier trial trenches into a wider context. The survey clarified the extent and limits of the settlement activity and its relationship with a nearby palaeochannel (PRN 23839). {3}
Archaeological excavation of the site revealed further evidence of a system of enclosures and ditches draining into an existing creek system. More extensive settlement remains including structures and metal-working sites were found to the south (PRN 23983). {4}{5}
