PRN 23832
Archaeological evaluation on land at Woolram Wygate, Spalding, found evidence for late Iron Age salt-making and limited scale domestic settlement; in the form of ditches containing pottery and briquetage fragments. The amount of briquetage fragments (including pedestal, container and brick fragments) suggests that a saltern may have been in operation nearby. This is supported by environmental analysis of the ditch fills, which identified large quantities of wood charcoal (possibly fuel) and frequent ashy lens containing burnt bone and fired clay. Direct evidence for settlement was not found. However, unabraded domestic pottery, animal bone and fired clay were retrieved from the ditch fills, indicating that settlement may have been in close proximity. {1}{2}
A subsequent excavation of the area revealed some late Iron Age features including a droveway and associated animal pens. The pens appear to have temporary and may be associated with seasonal use or with specific tasks such as clipping fleeces or separating stock. A ring ditch was also present and may represent a domestic dwelling. {3}{4}
