Full Description

PRN 44672 St Andrew's Church dates from c.1770 and replaced an earlier church which was demolished prior to that date. A Late Saxon church, referred to in the Domesday Survey of c.1086, may have also existed at the site. {1} The church retains some of its original Georgian features, including the bellcote, the nave and chancel windows and several tombstones. The church has since undergone several restorations; in 1905 Christopher Turnor restored the church and in 1925-30 probably designed the Arts and Crafts fittings i.e. the pulpit, communion rail and west doorknob (now removed). In 1974 the church was declared redundant, underwent minor restoration/repair in 1980, and is now used as a haybarn/store. For the full description and the legal address of this listed building please refer to the appropriate List of Buildings of Special Architectural or Historic Interest. {2}{3} During a watching brief a short length of wall adjacent to the present church was discovered. It is probable that this represents part of the former St Andrew's Church which was demolished to make way for the present structure prior to 1770 (PRN 44701). However, it is uncertain whether this is part of the church referred to in the Domesday Survey. {4}{5}
