Full Description

PRN 62791 Cropmarks of enclosures, field boundaries and trackways, forming part of a probable Late Iron Age/Roman settlement were identified by the National Mapping Programme. The cropmarks of the trackways can be seen to clearly run off Mareham Lane into the settlement area. {1} Various artefacts were found by a metal detector user. These include approximately 150 bronze coins, a small copper alloy votive axe-head, a stud-head brooch and the end of a steelyard arm. The material is said to be scattered over quite a large area. {2} There are numerous Romano-British finds spread over one acre, with a smaller site to the north, with no surface features apparent. Additional finds include a steelyard, two second century sawfish brooches, a disc brooch with gilding and paste stone, a zoomorphic brooch in the form of a bird, a bronze dress pin, and lead weights. About 50 further coins have been found from all over the site, most badly corroded, but including a sestertius of Fountstina the elder (posthumous) 104-161 AD, a radiate bronze of Claudius II 268-270 AD, helmeted head of Constantine I 307-337, Bronze of Crispus 324-330 AD London Mint, and a bronze of Constantine II 317-337. Also found were greyware pottery, Roman tile and a piece of Samian. {3}, HTM 20M Romano-British pottery 3th-5th century in date was found together with a lead cistern and cap of a column, which were ploughed up in November of 1951. {5}{6} Cropmarks at TF071 522 were seen in 1946 and interpreted as a Romano-British site with a road. {7} Possible settlement site associated with a Roman road. On the Roman road north of Sleaford, near Moor Farm, as side road extends west from the Roman road perhaps indicating there is a settlement in the vicinity that is not visible on aerial photographs.{8} Side road leaving Mareham Lane.{9} Mareham Lane revealed as parallel ditches on an aerial photograph. Also revealed were rectangular cropmarks, presumably of Roman period.{10} A series of aerial photographs depicting cropmarks of the settlement.{11}{12}{13}
