Full Description

PRN 13645 During trial trenching in 2002, a substantial east/west aligned wall of ashlar limestone, mortar and tile was recorded. The wall was large enough to suggest that it was part of a structure lying south of Trench 2, as no floor layers were identified in the trench. If the wall is part of a structure, it may suggest a relatively high-status building fronting onto High Street (possibly part of a Carmelite Friary). However, the quality and range of finds do not support this interpretation. Dump deposits of twelfth to thirteenth century pottery butted up to the wall. A plano-convex pinbeater, used in weaving, was also recovered.{1}{2} Archaeological excavation was undertaken on the same plot of land in April 2004. The excavation tried accurately date and phase the settlement evidence on the site and to place it into a context of general development of settlement in the area and to gather more evidence to elucidate the function of the wall excavated in the 2002 trial trenches. The excavation proved that the wall found in the 2002 evaluation was from a high status building, but did not confirm it came from the friary. However, circumstantial evidence in the form of artefacts found during the excavation (a fragment of a Chafing Dish and a large quantity of glazed Flemish type floor tiles) hint at a possible religious building. The excavation also identified two other walls of 12th to 14th century date, and a number of post-holes which were on the same alignment as the walls. These could have supported structures or scaffolding which was used during the demolition of the building and are consistent with a dissolution period date {3} {4}
