Full Description

Parish church built in 1839 by Sir G.G. Scott and W.B. Moffatt. Constructed in dressed stone and brick with ashlar dressings and slate roofs. It is in the Early English and Early Decorated style with pointed arched windows. For the full description and the legal address of this listed building please refer to the appropriate List of Buildings of Special Architectural or Historic Interest. {1}{2} A layer of limestone rubble was recorded in November 2002, during the monitoring of groundworks associated with the installation of a disabled toilet at St Nicholas' Church. The rubble deposit was thought to represent the initial construction layer for the church, which was built in 1839. Fragments of 18th and 19th century pottery were recovered from a buried topsoil layer that was sealed by the rubble layer. {3}{4} Further remains relating to the construction of the church were revealed during the archaeological monitoring of the groundworks for the extensions to the north elevation, conducted between July 2009 and July 2012. The limestone rubble layer, thought to represent the initial construction deposit, was again revealed, and fragments of post-medieval pottery, roof tile and clay tobacco pipe were recovered. {5}{6}
