Full Description

PRN 23776 During trial trenching in 2002, an undated east/west aligned ditch was recorded. The ditch fill was rich in burnt/baked silt and charcoal. It was suggesting that this represented possible salt-making activity of an early medieval/medieval date. However, later trial trenching in 2002 revealed gullies, ditches and a pit filled with fired silt and clay and fragments of low-fired brick very similar to that encountered during the first phase of trial trenching. These features have been interpreted as flues for brick clamps, along with the ditch from the earlier trial trenching. {1}{2}{3} Further excavations in October to December 2002 revealed more features associated with brick making (Area 3). The gullies which had been interpreted as flues for brick kilns are now thought to be elements of upstanding kiln structures. It was possibly working for only a short amount of time, producing significant quantities of bricks for the local economy. {3}{4}
