Full Description
PRN 62296
During a watching brief on a residential development, numerous features were identified which were thought to indicate a previously unrecorded Anglo-Saxon settlement. Pits and postholes were recorded in Plot 2 of the site; the pits contained 5th to 7th century pottery and animal bone, so were most likely to have been rubbish pits, while the postholes were suggestive of a structure of unknown form. An area of burnt clay adjacent to the postholes may be associated with a hearth. A large undated ditch to the north of these features may be the settlement boundary ditch. {1}{2}
The variety of fabric types in the pottery assemblage is suggestive of a sizeable community or occupation over a long period. The absence of early to mid Saxon features and finds across the remainder of the development site may indicate that the remains represent the north-east corner of the settlement. {1}{2}
