Full Description
The Church of St Edith is built wholly in the early Perpendicular style, except for the east windows of the aisles, which are in the Decorated style. The aisles are embattled, and both aisles and clerestorey have large gargoyles. The chancel was rebuilt in 1876, and is wide with a five-light east window. The nave arcades are of four bays. Repairs were made by Wilfrid Bond. {1}
The church is thought to have its origins in the 13th century. The tower was refurbished in the 15th century, and the west front of the north aisle was restored in the 19th century, when north and south porches were added. The south porch was later converted into a vestry. There is a piscina in the north aisle of the nave; the Eagle lectern is 18th century; a 19th and 20th century screen and gallery are set in the tower arch. The nave has a 16th century tiebeam, queen-post roof. Stained glass in this church dates to the late 14th and 15th centuries. {3}
A dendrochronological study was conducted on samples taken of oak timbers from the Church of St Edith in 2017. The samples were taken from both the upper and lower parts of the nave roof, and also from the south aisle roof. Tree-ring analysis indicated that all of the sampled timbers in both parts of the nave roof were likely obtained in a single felling episode, during the mid to late 15th century. The analysis indicated that all of the sampled timbers in the south aisle roof were also likely obtained in a single felling episode, this time during the mid 18th century. {4}
